10 Doctor Who Characters You Completely Changed Your Mind About

7. The TARDIS

The TARDIS has been the Doctor's longest serving companion (although, to be honest, nobody is 100% sure who is travelling with who) but viewers hadn't really been told all that much about their hero's beloved blue box since she first opened up her doors in that very first episode, An Unearthly Child, way back in 1963. That all changed (and it was about time, too!) in the Series 6 classic, The Doctor's Wife, in which the TARDIS took on the guise of a human being and came face to face with her raggedy man for the first time in... well, forever. And suddenly it all made perfect sense. The Doctor is devoted to the TARDIS but the TARDIS is devoted to him, too, and theirs really is a relationship that defies the realms of time and space itself. If fans had written the TARDIS off as a mere blue box, this episode served to remind them that she really is a sentient being in her own right, and none of us have looked at her in the same way since. You knew that she was bigger on the inside but she was far bigger than you could've ever imagined.
