Sarah Jane Smith is widely cited as one of the greatest Doctor Who companions of all time (if not the greatest) so it's a shame that she was up against "the genuine article", the mighty Fourth Doctor himself, for most of her run. In retrospect, though, it's almost as if they needed to upgrade the Doctor to suit the brilliance of his companion. During the Jon Pertwee era, though, she generally embarrasses the Third Doctor on more than a handful of occasions. It took her being stuck down five meters of grass hill in The Five Doctors to give her and the Third Doctor a level playing field. They had to throw everything and anything in her way just to ensure that she didn't steal the show completely but she still managed to do it for their entire season together.
