10 Doctor Who Couples That Created Unrealistic Expectations About Relationships

9. Martha Jones And Mickey Smith

Well, the moral of this love story is that if there's someone in your life who is constantly making you feel worthless, the chances are you'll eventually end up with their ex-partner, so try not to be too sad about it, eh? Life as the Doctor's coveted companion can be an emotional rollercoaster at the best of times but it was even more turbulent for Martha Jones who spent the majority of her tenure aboard the TARDIS grappling to escape the overriding shadow of her persistent predecessor. In retrospect, the Tenth Doctor probably shouldn't have invited her to travel with him at all, seeing as he was still completely coming to terms with the loss of Rose Tyler. She was stuck on a parallel Earth, Doctor. Build a bloody bridge! As such, Martha constantly felt like she was second best and even singlehandedly walking the entire Earth wasn't enough to win the affections of this grieving Time Lord. The course of unrequited love never did run smooth, but you can't blame a girl for trying. Meanwhile, for Rose's long suffering on/off beau Mickey Smith, things were just as complicated. You'd think that being abandoned by your girlfriend and subsequently accused of her murder when she went missing for a whole year, before living at her constant beck and call whilst she went gallivanting through time and space, would've been enough to convince this would be tin dog that perhaps she didn't have his best intentions at heart after all. Rose's desperation to return to the Doctor - that is, after being trapped in an alternative universe forevermore - was seemingly the final straw, however, so Mickey responded by finally growing a pair of balls, becoming a freelance Earth defender and marrying the girl Rose hated (for apparently no reason) because... well, why the hell not? There's logic in there somewhere. Probably.
