As Series 11's finale approached, fans wondered what kind of shock twist or surprise reveal showrunner Chris Chibnall would pull on us. And it was soon revealed that... well, there was no reveal. The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos turned out to be one of the most underwhelming finales in the show's history, with a dull plot, baffling character decisions, and a general low-stakes atmosphere that made it all feel like a bit of a waste of time.

However, if expanded into a two-parter, this story could have had much more of an impact. Despite the title, there actually isn't a battle in The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos: it takes place off-screen before the events of the episode. But if the story were a two-parter, there would be enough time and scope to actually show the battle, which would nicely raise the stakes of the episode and make it feel more climactic. We'd also have more time to get to know the Ux; an interesting concept that weren't explored to their full potential. We could've seen how people on Earth reacted when Tim Shaw tried to miniaturise the planet, plus Graham's vendetta against Tim Shaw could've been fleshed out. Particularly for a series finale, this episode feels lacklustre and disappointing. But turning it into a two-parter could've fixed that, and brought Jodie Whittaker's first series to a properly exciting finish.
