10 Doctor Who Episodes Where Evil Won

4. Midnight

The Midnight Entity may have been ejected back into the diamond-crusted surface of the planet, but its actions take a heavy toll on the Tenth Doctor and the surviving tourists.

Part way into the episode, the chummy atmosphere cultivated by the Doctor at the start has completely collapsed under the weight of fear and paranoia. While the rest of the passengers turn on the Doctor, it's up to the Hostess to grab Sky's body and eject them both out the airlock, saving the rest of the shuttle from murdering the Doctor and descending further into madness.

While the Hostess' death is tragic, we know that the Doctor can't always save everyone, so why does this feel like such a crushing defeat? It's because of how the Midnight Entity makes everyone on that bus complicit in the Hostess' death. They all played into its hands, becoming paranoid and pointing fingers, and not even the Doctor could reason with them, partly because the Entity also stripped away his voice.

And without a voice, without the ability to make all those inspiring speeches or witty quips... what is the Doctor, really?
