Tom Ellis joined the Doctor Who cast for the Series 3 finale Last of the Time Lords, playing Doctor Thomas Milligan. Milligan is a freedom fighter who accompanies Martha Jones as she walks the Earth, spreading the Doctor’s story, giving the lone companion someone to talk to - her own companion, almost.

Unfortunately, Thomas is tragically killed by the Master’s laser screwdriver while trying to save Martha after the two are cornered in a tense stand-off.

Martha and Thomas were beginning to form a romantic connection before his death, so when time conveniently rewinds, Martha tracks him down and the two go on to get engaged... all for Martha to later divorce him and marry Mickey Smith instead. For some reason.

Ellis was previously known for roles in shows such as Merlin, Once Upon a Time, and The Fades. He was most recognisable at the time, however, for his ongoing role in sitcom Miranda, as Gary Preston.

Everything then changed when Ellis hit the big-time in 2016 after securing the starring role in Lucifer, where he plays a demon detective, and generally stares at things dramatically.
