10 Doctor Who Love Stories That Will Warm Your Heart(s)

9. Jo Grant And Cliff Jones

These two came along way before Amy, Rory and the Eleventh Doctor became Doctor Who's 'first' love triangle. The Third Doctor was having a mid-life crisis anyway, what with his velvet suits, frilly shirts and flash car and, while he was always the perfect gentleman with Jo, you could see that he enjoyed hanging around with her. But who wouldn't? With her habit of wearing belts instead of shirts, thigh high boots and combining intelligence and gullibility, Jo was utterly adorable.

Totally devoted to the Doctor, it would take someone special to entice Jo away from the Time Lord but then in walks Professor Cliff Evans, a Welsh love God with Glam Rock hair and a fondness for tofu. In true rom-com fashion, Jo initially disliked the Professor before the two eventually warmed to each other. In a nice parallel, her first action is to ruin one of Cliff's experiments, just as she did when she met the Doctor.

The ultimate insult to the Doctor was that Jo saw Cliff as a younger, more dynamic version of him. As well as that, while the Doctor helped out when he decided to drop by the planet, Cliff was determined to devote himself to make the Earth a better place - even if that did mean involve mushrooms. Jo couldn't resist joining him up the Amazon and subsequently departed the TARDIS. The Green Death's final shot of the Doctor driving away alone in Bessie is rightly regarded as iconic. What's more, fans found out in The Death of the Doctor that the pair were still together and even had grandkids. Happily ever afters all round.
