10 Doctor Who Love Stories That Will Warm Your Heart(s)
8. John Smith And Joan Redfern
It's difficult enough finding romance when you live in a more restrained era or if you happen to work with the object of your affection. Teacher John Smith and Nurse Joan managed to overcome this and embark on a tentative relationship. Alas, as well as having a stalker maid keeping tabs on you all the time, the fact that one of you is an invented personality and not even really human is a bit harder to overcome.
Human Nature/The Family of Blood is one of the saddest romances in Doctor Who history and finds the Doctor at his most vulnerable. As for Joan, she falls in love with who John Smith is but that isn't actually the Doctor. The scene in which the Doctor glimpses a possible future life with Joan and dies happy in his deathbed is deeply affecting while the ending, which has the Doctor ask Joan to go with him and Joan refuse because the man in front is not her John is utterly heartbreaking. A classic doomed romance. Let's be honest, though. It was never going to work out, was it?
