10 Doctor Who Moments That Were Improvised

If this list has proven one thing, it's that Tom Baker was Doctor Who's improvisation master, and even when he returned to the show 32 years after regenerating, he was still up to his old madcap, ad-libbing tricks.

The Day Of The Doctor was a real treat for Who fans, but arguably its biggest treat was Baker's cameo as the curator of an art gallery. In his only scene, Baker interacts with Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor, discussing the true meaning of the "Gallifrey Falls" painting, and hinting that Eleven should head out in search of his lost home planet.

In the middle of their conversation, there's a slightly random moment where the Curator says "congratulations" and Eleven replies "thank you very much." Again, it feels completely random... but that's because it was random.

During the same tweetalong where he revealed John Hurt's improvised joke, Steven Moffat also noted that this small exchange was ad-libbed by Baker and Smith. In addition, Baker has previously stated that he didn't discuss the scene with Smith beforehand, giving the entire thing an air of improvisation.

Basically, if Tom Baker is in something, you're bound to get a magic moment or two - even if they aren't in the script.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
