10 Doctor Who Moments You Didn't See Coming

Thought we were going to stick to in-universe moments, did you? Well, surprise! Bet you didn't see this one coming. How fitting.

But in all seriousness, we aren't just cheating so we can make a cheap joke. The recent announcement that Russell T Davies is returning as Doctor Who showrunner in 2023 is - with no exaggeration - the most surprising bit of Who-related news we've had in the last 16 years. It might even be the most surprising ever.

That's because this isn't something that happens very often - not just with Doctor Who, but with any property. Showrunners, directors, and writers rarely return to franchises years after they've left them. There are exceptions of course - it happened recently with Babylon 5 - but on the whole, cases like this are basically unicorns.

Imagine Christopher Nolan returning to Batman, or Peter Jackson returning to Middle Earth (again), and that's somewhat akin to the excitement pulsing through the Doctor Who fandom right now. After a rough couple of years, there's a huge, RTD-shaped light on the horizon - and it can't come soon enough.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
