10 Doctor Who Side Characters With Tragic Backstories

4. The Foretold

The Foretold is presented as nothing more than a mindless killing machine, one that doesn't give its victims any chance to escape. If this creature marks you for death, then that's it: 66 seconds will pass, and you will die.

At the same time though, there's a surprising level of tragedy to this character, an extra layer of depth that is only revealed when you peel away those crispy strips of cloth, and take a look at what's underneath.

In another life, centuries ago, this mummified beast was a normal soldier, a normal man. However, this changed when he was outfitted with some state-of-the-art tech (including camouflage gear, and a personal teleport) that was powerful enough to prevent him from dying, forcing him to continue fighting endlessly.

Over time, his appearance became more withered, and the bandages that were once used to heal his wounds started to resemble the wrappings of an ancient mummy.

The Foretold is a soldier that just wants to end the cycle of violence that it's trapped in. Cruelly, it's essentially just been left on autopilot, acting on centuries-old orders through no fault of its own.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
