10 Doctor Who Side Characters With Tragic Backstories

3. Angstrom

A finalist in an epic, planet-hopping race known as the Rally Of The Twelve Galaxies, Angstrom's ultimate goal is to win enough money to help not just her family, but her entire species.

A long time before we meet her in Series 11's The Ghost Monument, Angstrom's home planet - Albar - was attacked by ruthless alien warriors called the Stenza, and the end result wasn't just a handful of casualties. Millions of Albarians were killed, and the ones who were lucky enough to survive were driven into hiding.

Angstrom's own family was part of the surviving group, evading the Stenza threat by any means necessary - but on the other hand, Angstrom's unnamed wife was one of the millions who died in the attack.

Angstrom describes this horrific assault as the Stenza "systematically cleansing" her people, a strong indication that the killing wasn't completely random. Regardless, it was this tragic event that motivated Angstrom to enter the race, where she ultimately emerged as a joint victor - however, it's unclear whether or not she managed to return to Albar and save her people.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
