10 Doctor Who Stories That Would Make Great Musicals

1. The Key To Time

The very best choice from the Doctor Who canon for a musical transformation is surely the infamous Key to Time season. Bracketing an entire series under one narrative umbrella years before Steven Moffat had even heard of a story arc, it has epic potential for a 70s inspired prog-rock-like behemoth of a show. The run had Tom Baker's Fourth sent on a mission to recover different sections of the legendary artefact of the title. A classic quest ensued, taking in such sights as the snowy, medieval planet of Ribos, a world-sized pirate ship, an army of marauding stones, a Zenda-esque romp about swordfights and androids, a water beast and an interplanetary war. If an audience doesn't come away from that exhausted and satisfied then there's no pleasing them. The interconnecting stories came courtesy of Robert Holmes, David Fisher, Bob Baker and Dave Martin and, last but not least, Douglas Adams, so there's no shortage of pedigree here. This season also saw the introduction of Romana and the first successful attempt to give the Doctor a companion who was the equal of him intellectually. Kate Bush would make a brilliant choice for the part, however the suggested star who might take control of the TARDIS may want his actress wife aboard... Brian May! He's got the hair and the stylings of the era down to a tee. Can he act? Is it important? Plus, he's married to EastEnders acting royalty Anita Dobson, who he could bring into the frame to portray his Time Lady companion. Hiring May as the figurehead for this cosmic journey is like pouring cream on a strawberry. It just makes sense! What did you think of this list?
