10 Doctor Who Stories That Would Make Great Musicals
3. The Chase
Taking the universe-spanning baton handed over from the previous entry, the next story runs with it and keeps running, as its heroes are being pursued by the merciless Daleks. Terry Nation's The Chase saw William Hartnell's original Gallifreyan stumbling on a plot to wipe him out care of the psychotic pepperpots. Depicting a flight across time and space, a potential production would face a logistical nightmare but one that results in a truly jaw-dropping show as the TARDIS attempts to stay one step ahead of its trundling nemesis. The Empire State Building, the Marie Celeste, a haunted house with Dracula and Frankenstein... great settings in spades, and then there's the small matter of the cameo appearance by The Beatles. The "Doctor Who" banner is guaranteed to get posteriors on cushions, but the involvement of the Daleks should ramp expectation up to mega levels. Now, obviously the great Mr Hartnell is no longer with us. Not that it's bothered the BBC, who recast the part in The Five Doctors. But who's going to step in to play this crotchety yet loveable Time Lord? Tommy Steele! The veteran performer has the sprightliness to make the First Doctor sing, dance and most importantly sprint as his metallic enemy go all out to exterminate him and his companions.
