Yajirobe was first introduced to replace Krillin as Goku's companion, following the the former's original untimely death at the start to the King Piccolo saga.

While gluttonous and shiftless, he was also quite a tough customer to begin with, using his sword to take down some fearsome enemies and brushing off the kinds of beatings that had literally crippled and killed major character's not long before.

After Krillin's resurrection, Yajirobe lost some of the spotlight as he moved into Korin Tower and became more of a secondary character.

Still, he remained fairly prominent well into the early arcs of DBZ. He even had a crowning moment of awesome in which he overcame his fears and cut off the tail of the rampaging and villainous Vegeta and then distracts him long enough for Gohan to transform into a great ape.

These actions ensured Vegeta's defeat and made Yajirobe the real hero of the Saiyan arc.

Unfortunately, this was a bit of a last hurrah for Yajirobe as after this he mostly stayed at Korin Tower and was only ever really seen in a few comedic sequences or lazing about at the tower any time the Z fighters went there to pick up senzu beans.

It's a fair bet that anyone who never watched the original series or the early Z episodes would not know who this guy is at all and a good many who have wouldn't remember much about him as the heroes of the series have long since passed him by.
