10 Dumbest Things That Have Ever Happened In Doctor Who

4. Flooding The TARDIS

Tom Baker is renowned for his portrayal of the Doctor's nuttier side but even he went into mental orbit during his final story Logopolis when he suggested removing a threat from the TARDIS by materialising under the River Thames and opening the doors. This solution would have been fine for a plumber wanting to flush out a ghastly obstruction but encouraging your companion to hang onto something before letting in a trillion tons of water? It reeks of wrong-headedness. Let's start with the basics. Everyone would drown. Then there's a question of depth. Not just the Thames but the TARDIS. It's infinitely big inside, so putting a standard Earth water mass in there is the equivalent of spilling your drink at the top of the Empire State Building. And what about the boats? Innocent sailors would be sucked to their deaths, so to speak. Embarrassingly the script was by script editor Christopher H. Bidmead, the new kid in town who wanted the series to adhere to solid scientific principles. So why, then, sitting alongside the rambling exposition about block-transfer computation, was there this item of utter lunacy? Baker probably required a lie down afterwards. Just as well, really, since he regenerated into Peter Davison at the climax.
