10 Dumbest Villain Plans In TV Shows

3. Shooting Yourself In The Head - Moriarty (Sherlock)

Sherlock Moriarty Shoots Himself
BBC Studios

The first two seasons of this BBC show all built to a tense rooftop showdown between Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes and Andrew Scott's Jim Moriarty.

Moriarty has orchestrated a brilliant plot to destroy the reputation of his greatest foe, by convincing the world that he staged his own cases in the name of fortune and fame. He then tells Sherlock to jump off the roof, or his assassins will kill his friends.

It's a pretty decent plan, until Moriarty realises he's literally going up against Sherlock Holmes.

The detective says that, as long as Jim is alive, there must be a way to call off the killers. Moriarty says he's right, just before popping a gun in his mouth and blowing his brains out.

On one level, this is a good plan, because now Sherlock has lost his get out clause. On another, it's a bad plan, because Moriarty is now dead.

Sure, you could argue that he died happy in the knowledge that Sherlock was doomed, but surely he would have preferred to carry on living in a Holmes-free world?

Also, Sherlock survived the fall! So it was all for nothing!
