8. Emma Gets a Boyfriend
Ross and Rachel's daughter Emma is just about to become a teenager, and decides that it's best to start as she means to go on: by getting herself a boyfriend. Yes, it's all very innocent, and yes, he's a very nice boy, but the experience is still a new one for Ross and Rachel. Their method of dealing with such an event is suitably neurotic: Ross hides under Emma's bed, an act he perfected in 'The One Where Paul's The Man' ("I too am a
neat guy"), and Rachel listens in on their phone conversations, as she did in 'The One With All The Resolutions' ("Laundry. Huh. Is that my new nickname?") Eventually, Ross and Rachel realise that this relationship is the first sign that their little girl is growing up, and come to terms with the fact that this is just the very beginning of her dating life, so decide to give Emma's boyfriend their blessing. In response, Emma and Chad (it's as good a name as any, isn't it?) respond in a manner that horrifies Ross and Rachel even more than the relationship itself: by going on a break.
