10 Epic Lessons Derren Brown Taught Us About Life

5. You Make Your Own Luck

Have you heard about the lucky dog? In an episode called "The Secret Of Luck", Derren visited the cosy town of Todmorden in West Yorkshire, with Dawn Porter as his "reporter". Derren and Dawn planted a made-up idea among town about a magic dog statue in the local park, which gave luck to whoever rubbed its head. Many people began to report lottery wins, new jobs, and one local shopkeeper even credited the dog for his record takings. People ended up traveling from afar, simply to stroke the dogs head. Derren particularly focused on the Todmorden butcher, Wayne, who had a run of bad luck throughout his life: he'd been knocked over by a sheep, shot in the nose with an airgun pellet and suffered burns when a gas cooker he was lighting blew up. As a result, Wayne's attitude was constantly pessimistic; until he received a little help from Derren and the lucky dog, that is. What We Learnt... Luck is a state of mind. Wearing your lucky socks to a job interview is not going to solidify the position, but wearing them will make you feel luckier. That positive thinking from this "feeling lucky" will affect your behaviour and, in turn, reap positive coincidences. Also, if you're more open to what's around you and engage in the world, you will be more lucky - so break the cycle, make connections, and let the good times roll.
