10 Epic Lessons Derren Brown Taught Us About Life
4. You Can Use Society's Ignorance Against Them

In the same way Muay Thai uses the stronger force of an aggressor against them - we can do the same in society.
In the "Great Art Robbery", Derren specifically selects a group of pensioners to steal a £100,000 painting by the Chapman brothers from a London art gallery. He chose older people to draw attention to their "invisibility" and show them in a new light. As Derren says on the show - "You don't stop being interesting just because you're 65" - and the mischievous participants involved certainly proved this.
Under Derren's hand they learnt to cheekily steal chips on Brighton seafront, and remove someone's watch with stealth. All of this led to the main event... the Great Art Robbery. Of course, no one suspected the pensioners, which highlighted the "invisibility" of that generation - the forgotten people.
What We Learnt..
Compared to other cultures, our society is not geared up to respect older generations in a way we should do - which is sad, because one day that's going to be us.
It's ingrained in our culture to treat older people differently, which can be both patronising and isolating for that generation. If you look deeper - the very people we disregard as old and boring are in fact the most interesting people around. What's more, you should really keep an eye on your chips when they're around.
