10 Epic Lessons Derren Brown Taught Us About Life

3. No Cash? Just Use Blank Paper

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy75GtKsOAw Another unbelievable triumph from the master of mind games, and one that people unfamiliar with Brown's work simply would not believe. Taking advantage of his anonymity in America, he tricks several American shop keepers into accepting plain paper as payment. Down to the smooth "take it, it's fine, it's fine" (three minutes in), Derren Brown is the king of manipulation. We all know we'd be nervous wrecks in that situation: merely watching him get caught by the hotdog vendor had our stomachs dropping through our butts. What We Learnt... The lesson from this is not how to pay with blank paper (although it would be a dazzling skill to have) but to show us just how defenceless we can be against psychological manipulation. It's crazy just how susceptible we are to phrase triggers (take it, it's fine) when we are in autopilot mode: almost anyone can be tricked with careful language and deceptive psychology. Also - never mess with a hotdog vendor. A valuable lesson to us all.
