10 Episodes That Prove 30 Rock Is The Greatest Sitcom Ever Made

4. Kidney Now! (Season 3, Episode 22)

On paper, this sounds like your typical "Very Special Episode" of 30 Rock. However, this is 30 Rock and we know better. In this episode, Jack tries his best to help his recently-found father Milton (Alan Alda) find a kidney transplant or he won't live much longer. Using his power, he creates a telethon to find one. So yes, it sounds like the episode many sitcoms would do to raise awareness of a cause by being overly serious. 30 Rock doesn't do this €“ it sees it as an opportunity to take the subject and give it a funny twist. The use of a telethon is brilliant and a great satire of the TV networks who can't wait to jump on the bandwagon €“ especially after some kind of disaster €“ to create a telethon, as they get huge ratings. There's literally about 19 cameos from famous musicians and singers and together they create a brilliant charity song (He Needs a Kidney!), which in real life was written by the show's composer and Tina Fey's husband, Jeff Richmond. It's well-written and performed and sounds very similar to songs like We Are the World and Do They Know It's Christmas? which just shows Richmond's ability to cater music to 30 Rock's sardonic style. Alan Alda is a tour de force as Milton, Jack's liberal biological father, and it's the best he's been in years. He's clearly having a ball playing opposite Baldwin and Fey, as well as getting to show off his comedic chops once again. Oh, and there's plenty of M*A*S*H references, which is never a bad thing. Joke Of The Episode:Milton: "A Guy crying about a chicken and a baby? I thought this was a comedy show."
