Batman, Spider-Man, The Amazing Screw-On Head!? As far as superheroes go, Mike Mignola's robotic creation isn't the most conventional, although neither is Hellboy, the paranormal character Mignola is most well known for writing. As a result, the two comics share a number of similarities in tone and aesthetic, but while one went on to become a popular movie franchise, the other only produced an animated pilot episode that the Sci-Fi Channel failed to pick up.

Set during the Lincoln administration, The Amazing Screw-On Head follows the titular robot and his manservant, Mr Groin, as they fight paranormal enemies who oppose the US government. What sets The Amazing Screw On Head apart from other heroes is his unique ability to attach his head to different bodies, all of which possess different capabilities.

The Amazing Screw-On Head's powers scream to be showcased in a weekly format, yet the pilot wasn't picked up for a full run, despite it being a surprisingly effective adaptation of the comic. Unfortunately, the involvement of writer Bryan Fuller seems to have cursed the project, as his stellar work on shows such as Pushing Daisies and Hannibal always seems to lead to early cancellation.

Quirky, funny shows like The Amazing Screw-On Head just don't fare as well as they should, but this doesn't mean that Mignola's comic doesn't deserve another shot on the small screen, either in animated or live action form.
