1. It's Purely A Sci-Fi Show
It is without a doubt that Doctor Who is a science fiction show, but it is also a lot more than that. Doctor Who was pitched as a historical and science fiction series, which is fairly obvious given the time and space aspect of the show.
There is generally three types of Doctor Who stories. Sci-fi, which are stories set in a purely science fiction world. Pseudo-historical, where an aspect of sci-fi is implemented in a moment of history, such as Victory of the Daleks with there being Daleks during World War 2. And finally a pure historical, where the only science fiction aspect of the show is the Doctor, their companions and the TARDIS.
In fact, the more sci-fi side of the show that we commonly see in Doctor Who nowadays is against what creator Sydney Newman originally wanted. When the second serial came across his desk, the Daleks debut, he was furious due to it featuring BEMs - Bug Eyed Monsters.
However, the original Dalek story got highs over 10.4 million viewers across its seven week runtime. And thus an icon was born. However, this is still the show's early days. to come there was purely historical stories such as Marco Polo, the Aztecs and the Highlanders. But this type of story stopped with the end of the black and white era, and Black Orchid in 1982 saw the shows final historical to date.
Now-a-days Doctor Who is a mix of pure sci-fi and pseudo-historicals. But the show still isn't a purely sci-fi show.
