10 False Doctor Who Facts You Probably Believe
4. "It's Called The Tardis"
As one of sci-fi's most iconic vehicles, the TARDIS, along with the Doctor, is the only other constant of the show. But where did the famous time ship get its name from? Well there is quite a lot of controversy and conflict.
If we go back to 1963, the pilot has Susan say to Ian and Barbra " I made up the name TARDIS from the initials, Time And Relative Dimension In Space". But is it "Dimension In Space" or 'Dimensions In Space"? Throughout the show, both variations have been used, but the singular was the first and also most frequently used.
However, was it Susan who coined this name?
No. Sadly, this can't be the case as shown in the Name of the Doctor, when the Doctor and Susan first leave Gallifrey, the technician uses the name, as well as being uttered many times by subsequent Time Lords. So it is very doubtful that a Time Lord renegade would coin the name and leave such an impact on their greatest achievement.
Also it is called the TARDIS. Not Tardis. T.A.R.D.I.S is an acronym, rather than a proper noun.
