Written by Glee's Chris Colfer, Struck By Lightning tells the story of a high school senior and wannabe The New Yorker editor who is failing at reaching his dreams. With the usual cast of encouraging yet ill grandparents, cheerleaders and eccentric school staff, it had the recipe to be a teen winner. While the story is told by the deceased main character (who is struck by lightning,) there's opportunity for the show to follow the same thread of flashbacks we've seen in other shows. It wasn't a universally loved film as Colfer's character came across smug, but it had all the ingredients of a coming of age drama in the same vein as Freaks And Geeks or My So Called Life, and there's undoubted promise for a small screen adaptation. The story is based so much on Colfer's real life experience that it would seem mad that anyone but him plays Carson especially with Glee on its final legs, but if not we could see Perks Of Being A Wallflower's Logan Lerman replace him. This cast is already full of TV favourites which include Rebel Wilson, Allison Janney, Dermot Mulroney and Christina Hendricks, and while some have moved more towards movies, a few couple reprise their roles. This show will work because there is so many high school kids longing to leave their small town and make it in New York. Post early Glee high school shows have been missing on TV, teens need someone on their screens telling them it's okay to think big and be odd.
