Here's another fact that you might not be aware of: there's a lot of debate among English scholars over William Shakespeare's sexuality. Of course, he was married to Anne Hathaway (not the actress, obviously), but there's a fair amount of evidence, not least from his sonnets, that he was gay. Who said this article couldn't be both indecent and informative? In 'The Shakespeare Code', Gareth Roberts makes a joke about this. Interrupting William's attempts to seduce Martha, the Doctor says, "Come on. We can all have a good flirt later," to which Shakespeare replies, "Is that a promise?" Recognising the rumours around Shakespeare, the Doctor then remarks, "Oh, fifty seven academics just punched the air." Which is a also a reference to 'Sonnet 57', a poem, which you guessed it, expresses love towards a man. And it's not the only gay joke in Series 3: Tallulah in 'Daleks of Manhattan' makes a link between the Doctor not fancying Martha, and having an interest in theatre. Maybe Shakespeare's flirt really did happen in the end.
