10 Forgotten Horror TV Shows You MUST Watch

9. The Terror

American Gothic
AMC

Based on Dan Simmons's 2007 novel, The Terror is an AMC horror anthology series and began its (so-far) three season run in 2018 and has featured talents such as Jared Harris, Tobias Menzies, Ciaran Hinds, George Takei, and Naoko Mori. The first season is a fictionalized retelling of Franklin's lost expedition, a mid 19th century failed voyage in the South Pole, and the second season was set in an American-run Japanese internment camp during WWII.

Serving as a spiritual companion to Lovecraft's work (the first season in particular hews closely to the Mountains of Madness), The Terror excels in employing slow and steady pacing to build a sense of dread and unease. In addition to this, the setting is appropriately claustrophobic, ensuring that the viewers never know what to expect regarding the characters' fates or the nature of the threat that stands in their way.

The second season trades this particular sense of dread and isolation for more conventional thrills, and while it does not match its predecessor's sheer thrills, it features interesting social commentary in addition to the gory and frightening setpieces.
