It’s Always Sunny... is such a unique show, so beloved despite an utterly unlikeable gang. When they distilled all of that unpleasantness into this special, it was definitely A Very Sunny Christmas.
Mac and Charlie have one of the show’s best B-plots here, and that’s saying something for a show this funny. Discussing their childhood Christmas experiences, Mac discovers that it isn’t normal for families to leave one present lying around for another family to take. Instead his criminal dad had been breaking them into house after house, nabbing gifts as they went.
Charlie, on the other hand, realises the truth about his mom’s ‘friends’ who always visited on Christmas Day with a gift for him. Strapped for cash, his mother sold herself as a Christmas prostitute, asking that her Johns pay in gifts for Charlie.
Dee and Dennis meanwhile, are sick of Frank’s terrible gifts for them. Worse, they’re sick of him buying what they want but keeping it for himself. This leads to an amazing scene where Frank hides in a sofa to overhear his coworkers gossip about him. But he gets too hot and squeezes out of the sofa, naked, in an Alieneseque birth. A Very Sunny Christmas indeed.
