6. Beloved Aunt (Season 1, Episode 8)

"I'm just glad you weren't in charge of the headstone."

In every aunt out there's least favourite episode, a well-meaning Larry agrees to write a newspaper obituary for Cheryl's late aunt. Her family are overjoyed at the gesture right up until they read it. Replacing the a in aunt with a c is the first of several instances where that particular profanity lands Larry in big trouble. Comedy veteran Paul Dooley is on winning form as Cheryl's father here, tearing Larry a new one for a disaster he had no real control over. The fact that Cheryl's family are rather humourless and uptight at the best of times makes this set piece all the more painful.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia's Kaitlyn Olson lends additional hysterics as Cheryl's setback-laden sister, Becky. Thanks to a bit of unpleasant advice from Larry to her boyfriend at the funeral, Becky finds herself both dumped and in mourning. It's perhaps the worst of the many times Larry foolishly incurs the wrath of Cheryl's family, adding a little extra oomph to this darkly hilarious early episode. Jeff's parents add some extra salt to the cauldron in this one and we can't help but laugh at Larry's unending suffering.
