2. "I think theres been a rape up there" (The Office)
Another one for the 'Excrutiatingly Awkward Scenes' list, as a training day at Wernham Hogg sees the arrival of Rowan, another innocent bystander trying to do their job without Brent's continual interference. However in a spot of customer care role-play, Brent's capacity for having the last laugh once again gets the better of him as he proceeds to act out playing the angry customer to Rowan's hotel manager. Occasionally The Office functioned as a form of glorious escapism, as any worker who's been forced to sit through any kind of badly acted training video or night of 'customer care' will surely attest to wanting to speed up the proceedings in any way necessary. Regardless Brent takes the roll of angry customer way too seriously, butting in and cutting off Rowan's attempts to dissuade his complaint, and loudly proclaiming he "thinks there's been a rape up there!". Cue mass silence and room-wandering stares, before Brent's right-hand man Gareth hurriedly scribbles something down in his notebook, presumably for later reference. It's such a ridiculous statement to make and so out of place for the otherwise very pedestrian exchange that was occurring, that the instant cringe-factor ushered in a wave of laughter from those watching at home. It probably says more about Brent's state of mind than anything else, but as a summary of what levels he's prepared to go to for the sake of attention, it was perfect.
