10 Game Of Thrones Characters We Never Saw Die
1. Rhaegar Targaryen
Last Seen:
By all accounts dead before the start of the series, Rhaegar has only actually appeared on screen once, in one of Bran's visions in the last episode to air: Season 7, Episode 7. However, his death - his chest and ruby-studded breastplate caved in by Robert Baratheon's warhammer at the Battle of the Trident - has been mentioned frequently by other characters.
Could He Still Be Alive?
Of all the characters whose death is reported rather than depicted, Rhaegar's is the one with the most witnesses. It seems fairly set in stone that this, one of the most important events of the Game Of Thrones backstory, happened just as is commonly described. So, how could the Mad King's eldest son and heir (Daenerys's brother and Jon's father) still be alive?
A lot of attention is placed on Rhaegar's armour in descriptions of the battle. Could that be because someone else was really the person wearing it? (It's happened before with Loras charging into battle in Renly's armour). Or maybe all those rubies had perception-shifting powers. We know that Melisandre's ruby necklace makes her look decades younger, after all. Could they also help to cheat death?
There is even a fan theory that Rhaegar escaped to become a Faceless Man and that in fact it is he, not Syrio, who is behind Jaqen H'gar's face.
Honestly, that last idea feels a bit of a stretch. But Rhaegar actor Wilf Scolding has been seen on set for the final season, so even assuming that Rhaegar is dead there are definitely more revelations surrounding him to come in one way or another.
