10 Game Of Thrones Characters We Never Saw Die
2. Syrio Forel
Last Seen:
In Season 1, Episode 8, fighting off Lannister guards with just a wooden sword. As King's Guard Meryn Trant slices through Syrio's wooden sword, Syrio tells Arya to flee, leaving her and the audience to assume the ending of the fight.
Could He Still Be Alive?
Many fans have long suspected as much. Syrio was the first time that Game Of Thrones did the thing of leaving a character to a presumable death and then never following up on it, and that has resulted in many people speculating that there could have been a different outcome. After all, for all that he's armed with just a broken wooden sword, Syrio (former first sword to the Sea Lord of Braavos) is established as an expert fighter and Meryn later referred to as a pretty useless one, so Syrio's defeat and death doesn't seem a certainty.
And then there's that Braavosi connection. Given Syrio's home in the same city as the Faceless Men, coupled with his insistence that "there is only one god and his name is Death", many have speculated a connection between the two. Indeed, given that Jaqen H'gar shows up immediately after Syrio's "death" and takes a great shine to Arya personally, it's often thought that they could turn out to be the same person.
Maisie Williams herself has been known to voice her support for this theory, so at least somebody within the Game Of Thrones team is on board with it. Could we be yet to discover that Syrio told the many-faced god "not today" one more time?
