The world of Westeros is very different to the one we live in, and while there is death around just about every corner, there is also rape. Men saw it as their reward after battle, and even anointed Knights took to it, as women had very little rights in George R. R. Martin's world.
It happened so often that it was almost normalised. Daenerys was raped by Drogo on their wedding night, yet she still ultimately fell in love with him. However, there were two major instances that fans simply thought was in bad taste.
Though the rape of Sansa Stark by Ramsay Bolton on their wedding night was horrific, it was when Jaime Lannister raped his sister Cersei in season four that angered fans the most. The fact that the relationship was incestuous didn't even bother people at this point, but this went too far.
After Jaime returned to King's Landing, he raped Cersei right next to their son's corpse. As if this wasn't bad enough, the interaction between the two in the book that scene is based on led to consensual sex, rather than rape. Quite why it was put across this way in the show is a mystery, as there was no real reason why it should be consciously changed from the source material for anything other than shock value. Game of Thrones was typically better than that, but not on this occasion.
