While the Lords and Ladies, Kings and Queens of Westeros indulged in their petty squabbles for who sat on a metal chair in King's Landing, the real battle was happening at the Wall and beyond. That at least, is what we were led to believe for seven seasons.

The Battle of Winterfell was supposed to be the moment that the war between the living and the dead finally evolved from a sub plot to be the real story of Game of Thrones. However, The Long Night fizzled out, and after minimal losses to the living, with the only main characters to bite the dust being Theon and Jorah, it was over.

The previous episode built up to it excellently, truly selling it as a battle worthy of eight years of hype. When it came to it however, the Night King was killed by Arya while Jon, the only man who truly worked to give the living a chance to survive, spent the battle hiding from a dragon. The whole thing couldn't have been any more underwhelming.

The Night King went out with a whimper, essentially rendering the previous seven seasons of building completely irrelevant. The war between the light and dark ultimately had absolutely zero effect on the conclusion of Game of Thrones, a move that in just one hour proved that the entire storyline that should have been the show's endgame was a retrospective waste of everyone's time.
