7. The Farmer (Finbar Lynch) and Sally (Trixiebelle Harrowell)

It is time for a a two-for-one. The Farmer and his daughter appear in the fourth-season episode “Breaker of Chains”. They take in Arya and The Hound (Maisie Williams and Rory McCann), offering them a night’s rest and warm meal.

The Riverlands are the most ravaged and war-torn of the Seven Kingdoms and the sparseness of their lives illustrates what happens to regular people when the lords of Westeros go to war. For a few short hours, Arya is back in a domestic setting and in the presence of a benevolent father figure. Furthermore, the Farmer’s clear disgust at Walder Frey’s actions (murdering Robb and Catelyn during the Red Wedding) reminds Arya that there are still good people in the world. It also shows the audience that the concepts of honor are not exclusive to nobles.

Of course, The Hound breaks the spell when he robs them blind. He bitterly tells Arya that, money or no, they’ll not live through the winter. Their return appearance in the Season 7 premiere, as corpses, is a painful reminder to both the audience and Clegane himself of how far he has come and how far he still must go in his journey toward redemption.
