10 Genius Decisions By Doctor Who Companions

9. Mickey Decides To Stay On The Parallel Earth

Poor Mickey Smith wasn't treated too well during his time on Doctor Who. When Rose ran away with the Ninth Doctor, she made Mickey wait, wondering whether she would ever return, unsure about whether or not he could move on with another woman.

And things didn't improve when the Tenth Doctor entered the picture. Charming, intelligent and handsome, he stole Rose's heart almost immediately, making Mickey feel like an unwelcome third wheel.

This in mind, it was understandable why he chose to leave them both behind, remaining on a parallel version of Earth to fight off the Cybermen. It can't have been an easy decision to leave his friends and start a new life, but the choice itself was respectful, courageous, and ultimately beneficial for all involved.

For starters, he got rid of all that emotional baggage relating to Rose, freeing himself from the pain of having to wait for her, while also giving himself a new purpose: to destroy the remaining Cybermen factories, and also to care for his grandmother.

Mickey's decision also turned him into a much tougher character. When he returned in Army Of Ghosts and Journey's End, he was much more confident, a better fighter, and he felt integral to the events of those episodes, rather than feeling disposable.

It was hard for him to say goodbye to Rose, but Mickey went on to prove that he'd made the right call.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
