10 Genius Decisions By Doctor Who Companions

8. Jamie Decides To Question The Doctor's Instructions

When the late 1960s serial The Enemy Of The World introduced a villainous dictator called Salamander who looked identical to the Second Doctor, it was pretty clear that, at some point, the two characters were going to be mistaken for each other.

And surprise! That's exactly what happens.

The story centres on a group of rebels who wish to use the Doctor to impersonate Salamander as a means to overthrow him, but in the final scene of the serial, Salamander turns the tables on the Doctor and does some impersonating of his own.

Entering the TARDIS, Salamander silently orders Jamie to operate the controls and fly the ship away, but sensing that something isn't right, Jamie pauses, wisely questioning this instruction. The real Doctor then appears behind Salamander and a fight ensues, during which the TARDIS is activated and Salamander is thrown into the time vortex.

Rather than just obeying an instruction from the Doctor - which some companions might've done - Jamie rightly pointed out that something was off, and it's a good job he did, because if he'd activated the TARDIS instead? The Doctor would've been stranded, and Jamie and Victoria would've been killed by Salamander shortly after.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
