10 Glee Covers As Good As The Originals

2. 'Defying Gravity' - Wicked, 'Wheels'

Easily the fan favourite highlight of the first season, Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel engage in a sing-off to prove who can really sing the Wicked highlight and Broadway classic 'Defying Gravity' as well as resolving some inner conflicts and social issues. Colfer's voice is a perfect match for Michele's - the former's soprano a lilting, ethereal and interesting take on Michele's more typically 'Broadway' voice. They take turns in verses and lines, the shifts contrasting wonderfully in the song as it rattles along on a gorgeous mid-tempo. Ultimately, the song is a clear indication of when Glee does it right - the song worked extraordinarily well in the context of the episode as well as showcasing the vocal talents of Colfer and Michele in a way that might not have been previously experienced or explored on the show - and easily a strong take on future cast-mate Idina Menzel's timeless rendition of the tune
