7. Scandal

Who says that political thrillers can't also make use of excellent music?

Scandal follows Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) - a figure loosely based on George H.W. Bush's press aide Judy Smith - as she runs her crisis management firm in Washington D.C.

Pope works pretty closely with the (fictional) President, Fitzgerald Grant III (Tony Goldwyn), and another key facet of the show is the relationship between the two. Because what's politics without a scandal or two?

As well as telling an expertly written story of political scandal (see where they got the name?), Scandal also features the music of artists such as James Brown, The Isley Brothers, Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, and Curtis Mayfield.

The use of R&B and old school soul lends the show's various (fictional) political figures some all-important humanity, and also gives Scandal a uniquely smooth personality that simply can't be beat.

If you need any more convincing, just know this: there's an Aretha Franklin cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water in season 4. It's used at exactly the right moment to give you some serious, ugly-crying feels.
