10 Greatest Animated TV Shows Of The 2000s

9. Invader Zim

Samurai Jack
Netflix

Invader Zim dared to push boundaries which other children's animated shows were too afraid to do. With an antagonist as its lead and some incredibly dark humour, it was really a unique show that was able to combine science fiction, action and comedy into one deliciously disturbing series.

This is also a stand-out show for the visual style. With animation technology that remains clean and smooth to this very day, the colour palette of Invader Zim is comprised of deliberately drab, dingy colours to further enhance the dark atmosphere.

The villainous Zim is on a secret mission to conquer Earth, unaware that his leaders were actually just hoping he would die and never return to his home planet IRK. Zim is an eccentric, reckless, short-tempered, incompetent Irken. As an audience, we should hate him, but there is something so compelling about his sheer oddness and strong drive for doing evil.

The unexpected cancellation of Invader Zim hurt at the time but it may have inadvertently helped the sci-fi series to become a beloved cult-classic, which now has a bigger fanbase than ever.
