10 Greatest Avatar: The Last Airbender Moments

9. Aang's First Avatar State - The Southern Air Temple

Last Airbender
Nickelodeon

The premier of the show had enough gravitas and atmosphere to get people hooked, but it was episode 3 where kids first watching this show got their first exposure as to what this cartoon was going to be all about.

After bringing his two new friends, Sokka and Katara, to his home - The Southern Air Temple - with hopes of finding more airbenders, Aang is instead slapped in the face with the realization that not only is everyone dead, they've all been dead for a century. Finding the skeleton of his mentor and surrogate father, Monk Gyatso, sends Aang into a grief and rage that - for the first time in the series - triggers the Avatar State.

While we wouldn't figure out exactly what this was for another season, you don't really need to know anything specific about it that the show hasn't told you already. The Avatar is an all powerful master of all four elements, so when Aang lets his emotions get the better of him, everyone is in danger.

It's a harrowing, haunting display of just how dangerous this little kid can be if he loses control.
