The Doctor has a fantastic relationship with pretty much every single one of his companions. Well...maybe not the Fifth Doctor. There was definitely some tension there. But for the most part, they usually click. The Doctor and Jamie, however, have a really special relationship with one another. There's a camaraderie between them, a pleasant, good-natured friendship that stands out even though it's been over forty years since they were on Doctor Who together. The actors seemed to have genuinely enjoyed each other's company, and it bleeds over into the chemistry between the Second Doctor and Jamie. Despite the fact that Jamie was from a more primitive time, Two recognized his intelligence and never talked down to him. As a result, Jamie became more confident and assertive as he explored the new world around him. Beyond that, Troughton and Hines added so many delightful bits of business between the two characters that re-watching each episode yields a new discovery of something silly they did together. Holding hands by accident, joking with one another...the Doctor has had a lot of companions, but you could definitely make the argument that Jamie was his best friend.
