It came as a huge shock to Scrubs fans a few weeks back when Sam Lloyd, who portrayed the hapless Ted across all eight seasons, passed away at the age of 56. A perpetual target of abuse from everybody around him, Ted’s only joy in life, at least until he gets married towards the end of the series, is performing with his band.
Known in real life as the Blanks, within the universe of the show as the Worthless Peons and billed (rather detrimentally to the members who weren’t Lloyd) as ‘Ted’s Band’ when they made tours of UK universities, they acapella quartet popped up across all eight seasons (more regularly towards the end) to perform everything from commercial jingles to classic TV theme tunes.
The irreverence of their songs to the scenario at hand was a regular source of delight, such as their decision to perform the Chilis restaurant chain's famous ‘baby back ribs’ riff to celebrate Carla’s conception as the only song they knew with the word ‘baby’ in it in any capacity.
Though they never served any plot function, the Worthless Peons could always be counted on to lighten the mood.
