When The Janitor ceased interacting solely with J.D after the conclusion of the show’s first season, his antics sometimes necessitated an accomplice, resulting in his occasional recruitment of cafeteria worker Troy.

Many comedies resort to the trope of having a dim-witted character, who is the butt of frequent jokes whilst being completely oblivious to the fact. Troy succeeds in this role largely because of how excellently his facial movements and body language express his dumbfoundness at whatever situation he finds himself in.

The Janitor’s visual frustrations at having his twisted plots complicated by his minion are also a sight to behold – how can a villain succeed if his henchmen are so utterly incompetent after all?

Troy was phased out of the show after the Janitor dumped him and fellow custodian Randall as his minions in favour of Ted, Todd and Doug shortly after their beloved Hibbleton acapella performance, but both were sufficiently memorable to appear in the finale several seasons later, even if Troy’s role is silent in this instance.

Be sure to fast forward the retch-inducing scene where the two of them bath in a vat of egg salad before serving it to J.D in a sandwich on your next rewatch, whatever you do...

Alex was about to write a short biography, but he got distracted by something shiny instead.
