10 Greatest Star Wars: The Clone Wars Episodes That Changed Everything
8. Carnage Of Krell
Move over Count Dooku, Darth Sidious and Aurra Sing - we've got a new villain to hate to our heart's content. After control over the 501st Clone legion is temporarily relinquished from the control of Anakin Skywalker to Pong Krell, Captain Rex is found between a rock and a hard place as the new General's contempt for Clones rages into careless and suicidal tactics.
The story arc is immediately compelling, exploring the ethics of obeying or disobeying orders in military operations. Ultimately, the question of responsibility is posed, with Rex deciding that it lies upon himself and his fellow clones to uphold the order in a battle that is sure to be lost with great causalities as long as Krell is in charge.
While General Krell had previously been billed as a ruthless and careless leader in the episodes leading up to the finale of this arc, the grand revelation of his motives - that he has sensed the Dark Side pervading the Jedi in the war - is emotionally stirring and full of conflict. The dramatic irony is dialled up to ten as the audience knows that Krell speaks the truth and that the rise of the Dark Side is inevitable, but also that this cannot reconcile the choices he has made.
In the end, this climax unsettles more than it finds closure.
