Bringing Sir Arthur Conan Doyles sleuth successfully into the iCloud era is a success in itself. But throw in some inspired casting and a plot arc that is loving to its source those wonderful deductions, Moriarty, a neat approach to The Hound Of The Baskervilles and an even smarter twist on the Final Problem - and its no big mystery why this has been a huge hit for the Beeb.
Major Players
Its a whisker-scratcher figuring out where to start when it comes to dolling out the plaudits on this one. On one hand, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman shine in their respective roles as Holmes and Watson. But on the other, creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt can be cited as the true geniuses of the mystery, as they continue to breathe new life into Doyles dusty tale with each short, sharp series of this masterful take on the legend.
What Next?
With Freeman and Cumberbatch flexing their acting chops in Hollywood there was uncertainty whether this years third series would be the last. Call that a red herring, as only recently Freeman dropped a clue about a Christmas special, which ties in rather nicely with the BBCs more recent announcement that a feature-length episode is due to be shot early in 2015. This will be followed with hope by a collection of already planned episodes to make up series four.
