5. Saffy Monsoon (Absolutely Fabulous)
Absolutely Fabulous is one of TV's best and most enduringly funny comedies as it follows the lives of self-obsessed PR guru Edina Monsoon and her friends and family. The core of the show lies in its female relationships, namely the friendship between Edina and her best friend, alcoholic fashion director Patsy Stone, and the relationship between Edina and her daughter, the brainy, down-to-earth and decidedly drab Saffy. Saffy, while definitely a central part of the show, is rather underrated in terms of being a genuinely funny and comedic character, always seen as the straight man to Edina and Patsy's debauched, dumb, and often drunk escapades. She is the straight man, let's not be wrong there, but she's also secretly confident in herself, the emotional centre of the show and, let's be honest, a pretty good person in the face of a hilariously turbulent home life. It's a shame, then, that she isn't really shown or acknowledged to be one of the funniest characters on the entire show, often cutting through every delusion of the New Age-believing, hype-driven Edina and engaging in vicious tete-a-tetes with her arch-nemesis Patsy which are brilliantly witty, dry and downright cruel in their cutdowns. We couldn't ask for more.
