10 Happiest Accidents in Doctor Who History

7. The Master

The Master is in a league of his own. Conceived to act as a Moriarty to the Doctor€™s Holmes, the Master was only intended to appear in just one story. However, Producer Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks were so confident of the success of the Master insisted he be written into every single story of Jon Pertwee€™s second season. In retrospect it does seem like overkill, but in reality, not one of those stories can be considered bad. Any criticisms can€™t be leveled at the inclusion of the Master, no small part due to the sterling performance of Roger Delgado. The Master never becomes tiresome. By the end of the series he is finally arrested by UNIT closing that chapter for the time being. But also, despite the fact the Master was in every story, he isn€™t in every episode. For some weeks the Master wasn€™t seen at all and there was no doubt great excitement about when and how he would eventually turn up. The strength of the character alone meant that he could be re-invigorated like the Doctor himself after the death of Roger Delgado, and up until the present day. We€™ve been able to see such great moments as Derek Jacobi playing the Master for about 30 seconds in one of my favourite moments of Doctor Who ever. I for one certainly hope the Master returns in some shape or form to rival the Doctor€™s own varied journey. The anticipation of such a thought is overwhelming.
