10 Happiest Accidents in Doctor Who History

8. Bow Ties

Last costume one I promise. Bow tie sales have shot up since the debut of the 11th Doctor€™s debut. He was well and truly made them cool. But it could have been a lot different. Apparently Matt Smith€™s original costume was a lot more buccaneer and pirate-like and photos exist of Matt looking miserable at the fitting that have yet to see the light of day as do the designs. The story goes that Matt left and came back in his own shirt and tweed jacket and influenced by Patrick Troughton's costume, grabbed a bow tie to complete the ensemble. Geared up, Matt started jumping around using a pen as a sonic screwdriver and everything stuck from there. As a result we were spared what could have been another Colin Baker situation.
